Heretical Thoughts About Science
George Gilder, Gilder
Telecosm Forum (8/16/07): Here's the
view of the paramount living physicist on global warming: http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/dysonf07/dysonf07_index.html
Dyson is the unlisted man on Feynman's Nobel prize, since it was Dyson who
showed that the Feynman and Schwinger versions of QED (quantum electrodynamics)
were reducible to each other.
Freeman Dyson, Heretical Thoughts About Science (8/8/07):
...."My
first heresy says that all the fuss about global warming is grossly
exaggerated. Here I am opposing the holy brotherhood of climate model experts
and the crowd of deluded citizens who believe the numbers predicted by the
computer models. Of course, they say, I have no degree in meteorology and I am
therefore not qualified to speak. But I have studied the climate models and I
know what they can do. The models solve the equations of fluid dynamics, and
they do a very good job of describing the fluid motions of the atmosphere and
the oceans. They do a very poor job of describing the clouds, the dust, the
chemistry and the biology of fields and farms and forests. They do not begin to
describe the real world that we live in. The real world is muddy and messy and
full of things that we do not yet understand. It is much easier for a scientist
to sit in an air-conditioned building and run computer models, than to put on
winter clothes and measure what is really happening outside in the swamps and
the clouds. That is why the climate model experts end up believing their own
models."....

Friday Feature / EZchip: Nothing to stop them
Gilder
Telecosm Forum Member #1 (8/15/07):
Does EZchip (LNOP) do the home gateway
management?
Gilder Telecosm Forum Member #2 (8/15/07): EZchip's capacity and throughput is much, much too big for
the access network, including the home gateway. However, there are plenty of
folks doing home gateways... including Ikanos (IKAN) and Amedia
Networks (AANI). All of these gateways can work with the telcos' Carrier
Ethernet/IPTV.
George Gilder, Gilder
Telecosm Forum (8/16/07): The EZchip
architecture begins at the top with 10 gig carrier Ethernet, but there is
nothing to stop them from ultimately limiting the "carrier class"
features and producing enterprise and even home gateway devices which also hit
the IP-Ether-way.
Gilder
Telecosm Forum Member #2 (8/16/07):
Great comment, George. EZchip has already mastered
the upper end. It would not cost them much to move into the lower gigabit NPU
(network processor) business. They already possess the intellectual property,
thus R&D costs to make it happen would be minimal. The access and mobile
wireless networks immediately come to mind. I don't know for sure, but I think
the total addressable market (TAM) for these areas would exceed the CESR
market.
If you'll recall, Ron Jankov of NetLogic (NETL) indicated on his
recent conference call that mobile wireless would be their fastest growing
market next year.
On the high end, enterprise Ethernet would also be a great business to
break into. The NP-4 is on track to do that. The possibilities are numerous and
the potential is great. For the high end and lower end.

Friday Blogger Bonus / Major Skype Outage in Progress
Ken Fisher, Ars Technica (8/16/07): Skype has
confirmed it is having software problems on its network, resulting in a lack of
connectivity for millions of Skype users. Many users cannot currently
authenticate to Skype, rendering all voice, chat, and voicemail services
effectively offline. Some users appear to be unaffected, having authenticated
before the problems began last night.
At 2PM GMT (9AM ET, 6AM PT) Skype announced that its engineering team had
discovered a software issue that is expected to be resolved "within 12 to
24 hours." The original entry, which has been removed, read: "Due to
peer-to-peer network issues there are problems with Skype login. This issue is
being investigated. We will give new updates when the issue has been resolved.
We apologise for any inconvenience." Skype has pulled its client downloads
from the site until the problem is fixed.
Skypeophiles here at Ars tell us that some users are showing up on contact
lists already, but they are nonetheless having problems connecting to them for
voice or text chat. A chat message I sent to one user arrived after 30 minutes,
and we could both "see each other" as being "online" on our
contacts list, even though we weren't ….
